Author Event at the Former Traverse City Asylum

I’ll be at the Outdoor Craft and Vendor Show on Saturday August 9th, at the Village at Grand Traverse Commons—one of my absolute favorite spots in Northern Michigan and the real-life inspiration behind my Northern Michigan Asylum series.

Once the historic Traverse City State Hospital (formerly known as the Northern Michigan Asylum), this beautifully restored landmark is now a vibrant hub filled with shops, restaurants, and wineries. The stunning grounds and century-old architecture create the perfect atmosphere for a day of browsing, book-loving, and soaking up Traverse City’s one-of-a-kind charm.

I've been visiting the former hospital for years and have taken the guided historic tours many times. When my son was a toddler, I often took him there to run and play on the sprawling grounds. There's also a network of hiking trails in the woods behind the once asylum, including a trail that leads to a spot known as the Hippe Tree. The Hippie Tree is fallen willow that's now a series of twisting branches draped in vibrant neon paint. The first time I read about this place, an online article mentioned that local lore had labelled it a portal to hell. Having visited many times now, I tend not to think so. Instead it's a unique little sanctuary, a melding of nature and graffiti.

The market itself will a wide array of local artisans, crafters, and makers. Stop by my table to say hello!
